cooking, cards, budgieman

Fall -- or autumn, as they prefer to call it here -- is definitely here. The equinox has passed, a moon cake was eaten, and the fallen leaves crunch under my feet.

We had a weekend-of-absolutely-nothing-planned. It gave us a chance to recover from our recent traipses to London and the Peak District and, most importantly, the down time allowed us to look forward to our next outings, wherever they may be. The weekend gave me a chance to play in the kitchen and make a leek quiche and a plum crumble, which resonates a perfect lazy weekend, in my mind.

Also, I had an opportunity to work on my Christmas cards. I know what you're thinking, "it's only the end of September, Helen" but I really don't work well under pressure.

I've made 40 thus far -- 2/3 of the way to completion.

I forgot to mention one thing from our trip to the big city last weekend. I mentioned we watched the street performers in Covent Garden but not the Budgieman, a singing performer in front of the Tate Modern with -- you guessed it -- budgies . I watched him, open-mouthed, before being dragged away. He sang the most catchiest tune, which I proceeded to mimic as we walked along the Thames. To my husband's glee, I misplaced the tune somewhere between the north side of the Thames and Buckingham Palace and instead, transferred the bu-bu-bu-budgieman lyrics to the tune of Spiderman. Luckily, and to G's dismay, I found some clips to refresh my memory.

Thanks for the great link for the plum crumble! Will be trying it tonight as we just acquired a bag of italian prune plums from our friends' yard. What do you think of adding oats to the topping?
