Lincoln

Today we took a scenic drive to the eastern part of the East Midlands through the big box store land of Mansfield through Sherwood Forest (not too exciting) and finally to Lincoln (over 1.5 hours away). We were unfortunate that it only rained while we were in the car and not walking about in Lincoln.

We visited the Bishop's Palace (free with our membership). We were the only ones visiting this site - not too surprising as it was cold and windy out.

We then paid admission to the Lincoln Cathedral and had an excellent 1.5 hour tour. This Cathedral is the third largest in the UK (behind St. Paul's and York Minister) and is so beautifully and intricately carved. Here are three shots of the Catheral at three times of the day:

The city of Lincoln is a very cute city lined with cobblestone streets and unique shops to browse. We only wished that we had an earlier start in the day to have more exploring time. The main street in the historic part of the city is called "Steep Hill" and that's exactly what it was - a steep hill (probably the steepest hill I have ever seen in the UK!). The climb back up the hill made us stop for our first English afternoon tea. And now I can't stop thinking about those homemade scones with jam and cream. (Note: English scones are what we call biscuits in Canada and English biscuits are what we call cookies in Canada.) More pictures of our day trip are available here.
