With a blink of an eye, the English summer vanished with a poof! As quickly as a pulled out my summer clothes to wear -- abracadabra! -- the dropping temperatures reminded me that it is time to return my dresses and shorts to its rightful place, underneath the bed, and to retrieve my jumpers (aka sweaters) and dark-coloured trousers (aka long pants), not-so-patiently awaiting its seasonal turn.
Don't get me wrong, I like wearing wool coats and scarves, turtlenecks, and boots like any other 20-something -- err, 30-something -- year old woman but it's only mid-September, when Indian summers are supposedly at its finest.
I know now not to let the day's sunny facade fool me and to wisely dress in layers. It's nippy outside, it's chilly in the office, and worse off, it's cold in the house -- we're resisting the urge to turn the heat on. My favourite house cardigan is becoming a perminant fixture on me: it's on first thing in the morning when making coffee and it's on when I fall asleep watching tv in the evening. (It's my favourite because it's so worn-out and comfy and has reindeers on it -- what's not to love?).
Yesterday, when I was humming and hawing on what to get myself for breakfast, a light bulb went off when I decided on oatmeal with a light dusting of brown sugar. The perfect winter breakfast before heading out for a day of cross-country skiing.
Who knew it would be the perfect pre-autumnal equinox breakfast?
Living in a 3-seasoned climate should not be a novelty for me, especially coming from Vancouver, where winter is often in absence. But a summer missing-in-action takes a bit of getting used to.
Can it be that I've joined in Britian's national past-time: complaining about the weather.

I feel you on the weather change. In Aberdeen--as with most of the UK--we didn't have a summer, which means we have to brave autumn without a sun tan and no fond memory of sun and beach! AND bear in mind I am from Saskatchewan, which has brutal autumns (but with great summers!)
Autumn in Vancouver: now that's beautiful! Not to mention, its spring and its numerous cherry blossoms - my favourite time of year.
