pardon my french

For me, living in the UK, has sparked an interest in etymology, or word origins. Even though I've mentioned previously, the number of new English words that we've encountered so far still amazes me.

Surprisingly, there is quite a French influence as well, despite what you may think. English pancakes, a la crepes, are served at tea time or as a pudding. Courgettes and aubergines are found at the supermarkets. And the topic of the discussion last night was gateaux. Now a gateau is a layered cake atop with butter icing, akin to a Black Forest gateau but not a birthday or a wedding cake. Go figure.
