holidays

Living in a different country means that you’ll have to learn a whole batch of new holidays, or more specifically, let go to the ones you’ve grown accustomed to. Being in England, means that there are no days off on Labour, Thanksgiving, and Remembrance Days, and as a student, the absence of these stat holidays in the fall is much to my dismay! Also, the shops in the town centre are not going to in-your-face advertise Mother’s Day, in an attempt to remind you to send cards, give flowers, or buy chocolates on the second weekend in May (for some reason, the English Mother’s Day is in March).

This weekend is the first 3-day weekend for us; Monday is the spring bank holiday (whatever that means!). There’s nothing like having a long weekend but, as some may know, being a grad student equates to long weekends. However, I don't know why the Brits don't space their long weekends throughout the year. There's another 3-day weekend at the end of May, making it exceptionally timely for my birthday :)
