The weather was not in our favour today so we did a mini tour of our neighbouring Derbyshire towns. We’ve driven through Matlock many times and we finally decided to make a stop today. We found ourselves on a trail to High Tor and although we weren’t too sure what it what really entailed, we did pursue it to the end. We met other walkers enroute and realised how totally unequipped we were (me especially!). They were out walking in their boots and gaiters and gore-tex, while I was wearing city shoes and a wool coat. We were basically walking up a ‘flat’ hill, so we were able to booty pass them and not get too muddy in the process. Hiking the North Shore mountains definitely has its training advantages ;)
The trail continued to the next town, Matlock Bath, which our guidebook calls a “delightful, lost-seaside town”. You might be wondering how can this town be a seaside town when it’s the middle of England with no nearby seas but Matlock Bath has the relaxed touristy feel. The shops on the promenade consists of mostly souvenir shops, brightly-lit and noisy arcades, aquariums, and fish and chips stands (literally every second shop sold fish and chips).
As expected, we had fish and chips for lunch today – with mushy peas. We were initially curious about the lumpy green mash placed before us but not anymore! We can see why the palate for mushy peas hasn’t venture across the Atlantic Ocean or the English Channel for that matter! Definitely pass next time.
More photos from today.
