Birmingham Chinatown

In response to our “no more old buildings!” protest, our tour of castles is on hiatus this week.

Yesterday, we tried our neighbourhood Cantonese take-away (that’s take-out to the non-Brits) restaurant – not too bad. On their menu they mention, “special meals not listed can be supplied on request”. Let’s see if I can stump them the next time around ;) Funny enough, most restaurants around here don’t seem to offer inside seating, rather just a counter for you to order and pick up your food.

Today we took the train to Birmingham (40 minutes away) to visit Chinatown and stocked up on food! It’s a good thing that we both brought backpacks to carry our goodies home with us. We started off the morning with a Chinese bun each and dim sum for lunch. Even though Birmingham is the second largest city in the UK, we were disappointed that Chinatown was more like China-only-half-a-block-big – oh well, at least they had what we were looking for.

We couldn't believe this sign we encountered several times through Chinatown (and the prices for that matter!).
Although this was a food/eating expedition, we did manage to culture ourselves with a trip to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. I enjoyed looking at the artefacts (mostly a collection of pottery and jewellery through time) and spent the rest of the time waiting somewhat patiently for someone to read every display panel!

Tomorrow stayed tuned for our sushi making extravaganza with our new sushi making equipment we received yesterday in the mail (thanks S&J)!
